American Estates Adds Spanish Wines
Thursday, 24 July 2008
Botijo Cabernet SauvignonAmerican Estates Wines (AEW), a specialty wine importer that has been in the business since 1985, has introduced Spanish wines to a portfolio that already includes selections from Australia, New Zealand and California.

According to company president George Galey, AEW sought indigenous grapes from old vineyards made in modern wineries for its Spanish selections.

"I traveled throughout Spain to see the vineyards and meet the vintners and bring a personal approach to my selections. I selected just one winery from each region," says Galey. "Paramount was the preservation of each D.O.'s terroir, which I ensured by selecting old vine vineyards planted in indigenous grapes," he continues. "Then, that vineyard expression had to be preserved by minimalist but clean winemaking, with only judicious use of oak."

The wines were picked from eight different Spanish regions. Lar de Paula comes from the province of Alava and is made with local Tempranillo grapes, and is typical of the type of wine that AEW was attempting to procure with its Spanish selection (as it was made with indigenous grapes).

Other wines that AEW is importing include Luzdevina, from the region of Bizero; Freiza Rigau, from the northwest corner of Spain that is well known for producing Cavas and Ibérico from the region of Catalayud, where AEW created its own cuvee.

The wines are now arriving at stores and restaurants across New York and New Jersey and soon will be available nationwide. It is planning to expand its Spanish porfolio during the summer in time for the fall season.
